EDD: Interaction Design Class 4
We started off this class by watching “HAL 9000: “I’m sorry Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that””, a clip from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was basically about how Hal, an artificial intelligence, gains self-awareness, and denies Dave’s order to Hal to open the pod’s door because if it does that Hal will be destroyed. Hal was show as a circle and a glowing red dot in the middle.
This film was made in 1968. To this day, to show a AI growing self-aware and becoming rebellious, a glowing red dot is used. The effects of that film is still seen to this day as most machines don’t use a red glowing light to even show low battery as it is considered to be a symbol of danger.
After that he showed us a clip from Minority Report, “Minority Report ‘s gesture-based user interface”. In that clip a gesture based AI was being used by Tom Cruise which is now considered the future of technology.
He told us that as designers, we need to watch science fiction as much as possible. The goal of showing all these videos was to let us know how people thought of what technology would be years later. He then asked us to analyze our maps, both the anecdotal maps and the time data map, and make an invention that would help us in our day to day life.
